An estimate: your real number depends on fitness, terrain and how you walk. Hills, stairs and carrying a bag add more.

Why a walk after meals helps

General information for healthy adults. Calorie numbers are estimates and vary with fitness, terrain and walking style. If you have a heart, lung or joint condition, ask a doctor how much walking suits you.

Calories burned by steps

For a 70 kg person. Calories rise in proportion to body weight, so a 90 kg person burns about 30% more.

How the calculator works

It turns steps into minutes using a typical step rate for each pace, then uses the energy cost of walking at that pace from the Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. Calories per minute are the activity’s MET value × 3.5 × your weight in kg ÷ 200.

PaceSteps a minuteMET

Moderateabout 4.5–5 km/habout 1003.5
Briskabout 5.5 km/habout 1154.3
Very briskabout 6.5 km/habout 1305

Short walks count too. A 10-minute walk after meals is one of the easiest habits to add; read walking after meals on an Indian diet and try Japanese interval walking for a harder session. To see what your daily calorie target should be, use the calorie calculator.

Questions

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

For a 70 kg person at a moderate pace, about 429 kcal in total, of which about 306 kcal is extra over resting. Heavier people and faster walkers burn more.

Do I need 10,000 steps a day?

Not necessarily. A meta-analysis of 15 studies in The Lancet Public Health found the benefit for lifespan levelled off at about 8,000–10,000 steps a day for adults under 60 and 6,000–8,000 steps for adults 60 and over. Any increase from a low starting point helps.

Does walking faster burn more calories?

Yes, per minute. A brisk pace of about 100 steps a minute or more counts as moderate-intensity activity for most adults, which is what activity guidelines ask for.

Should I eat back the calories from walking?

Usually not. If you set your calories with an activity level that already includes your usual walking, adding them again counts them twice.
